"Many evangelical leaders have debated the question of whether or not a Pastor who embraces the inerrancy of Scripture and its views on homosexuality and abortion should be willing to accept such an invitation. Al Mohler, for instance, has said he would not accept the invitation on the grounds of President-elect Obama’s stance on abortion."

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You have a GOLDEN opportunity to pray for our soon-to-be nation's leader in front of the whole nation... and you don't take it because you disagree with his view??? I'm pretty sure Jesus disagreed with the tax collector's extortion, etc. when he went to their houses... but that didn't stop him from going and being a witness and praying for them.

This, in my mind, is one of the BIGGEST errors of the Christian church today. It's leaders are often "exclusionary" rather than acting in a loving manner and accepting opportunities to pray for other people. What a joke.

Enjoyed reading the post, Brandon. I agree in your commendations of both Obama and Warren's decisions and appreciate you blogging about it.

Just seeing people discuss this issue opens up doors to share the Gospel of Christ, and I only hope that God will give myself and other Christians the boldness and wisdom to take advantage of those opportunities in a way that is pleasing to Him.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I did read an interesting thought over at Denny Burk's site that's worth checking out also. Good discussion.

I know this is pretty old, but I just discovered your blog and I wanted to comment on this. I'm gay and I am in a loving, long-term relationship with my girlfriend. I also grew up in a very loving and open Christian household. I admit, when I first heard that Rick Warren was speaking, I got defensive. I think I even wrote a blog post about being upset. But I got to talking with my girlfriend (we're both somewhat conservative liberals - staying pretty close to the middle), and we both came to the agreement that it was a really great thing that Obama was doing - bringing both sides together in an attempt to do just what you said: create dialogue. I had the incredible opportunity to be at the inauguration and hear Rick Warren speak in person. While I felt (embarrassingly) sure that what he would say might be negative, I was VERY pleasantly surprised and it reminded me to stay open-minded and not close people off just because they disagree. I think that's something every side need to remember. It gave me a lot of hope that while debates and arguments will continue, there at least can be some common ground.

I'm enjoying your blog immensely, and while we might not agree on everything, I respect your opinion. Thanks for sharing this.

    Nikki,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. And wow - you got to be there? That's awesome! I'm glad you were pleasantly surprised. I heard Rick on an interview recently trying to deal with the media mess. Sadly, I think a lot of Christian leaders aren't as harsh as they sound, it's just that the media demands that they speak to some certain question. Good people wind up looking mean because of the corner they are backed into.

    I'm thankful you're reading!
